Seit dem 24. Februar 2022 kennen Politik und Medien verständlicherweise kaum noch ein anderes Thema, als den völkerrechtswidrigen Einmarsch Russlands in die Ukraine. Die Beiträge pendeln hierbei zwischen der Fragestellung, inwiefern die russische Aggression möglichst nachhaltig sanktioniert werden kann, einer möglichst effektiven Unterstützung der Ukrainer in ihrem Bestreben, ihre Heimat zu verteidigen, sowie die Aufnahme der aus dem Kriegsgebiet geflüchteten bzw. vertriebenen Menschen. Aber wo war der Aufschrei, als Aserbaidschan im Herbst 2020 Armenien überfallen hat? Sowohl die Politik als auch die Medien schwiegen damals. Von einer breiten öffentlichen Unterstützung für das damals überfallene Armenien war keine Rede.
Dabei war der Krieg um die zwischen beiden Ländern umstrittene Region Bergkarabach gekennzeichnet von zahlreichen aserbaidschanischen Kriegsverbrechen, wie dem Einsatz von völkerrechtlich geächteter Streumunition in der Stadt Stepanakert oder der Hinrichtung gefangen genommener Zivilisten. 1999 waren Angriffe auf eine ethnische Minderheit noch ein Grund für die Intervention der NATO im Kosovo-Krieg. Vor zwei Jahren jedoch blieb der Westen untätig, so dass die Frage gestellt werden darf, ob hier mit zweierlei Maß gemessen wird? Auch nach dem Ende des Krieges kam es von Seiten Aserbaidschans zu Kriegsverbrechen an der armenischen Bevölkerung Bergkarabachs, wie die Verschleppung sowie körperliche und psychische Misshandlung nicht geflüchteter, zumeist älterer Menschen. Eine Reaktion des Westens blieb leider erneut aus.
